Understanding the disconnect between external achievement and internal fulfillment
By Erica St. Bernard, LMFT
Have you ever found yourself asking, “Is THIS it?” despite achieving everything you set out to accomplish? If you’re a high-achieving woman who feels empty inside even though you’ve checked all the external boxes, you might be experiencing what I call The Success Riddle.
This riddle—defined as “a person, event, or fact that is difficult to understand or explain”—affects countless accomplished women who’ve “made it” externally but feel hollow internally. If this resonates with you, you’re not broken. You’re not ungrateful. You’re simply experiencing the disconnect between performance-based success and authentic fulfillment.
The External Checklist
Let me paint a picture that might feel familiar:
- The degree
- The license or certification
- The career
- The marriage or family
- The title
- The income
- The respect
But instead of feeling FULL, you feel EMPTY.
You “made it” by external standards, but perhaps you feel like you LOST yourself in the process. For many of us, success has equaled self-abandonment—intentionally or unintentionally, we’ve allowed parts of ourselves to be left behind or disregarded.
“What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self?” – Luke 9:25 (NIV)
“What good would it do to get everything you want and lose you, the real you?” – Luke 9:25 (The Message)
“Even if you gained all the wealth and power of this world, and all the things it could offer you, yet lost your soul in the process, what good is that?” – Luke 9:25 (The Passion Translation)
Beloved, I invite you to come back to yourself. Together, let’s explore how we get back to her.
Understanding the Setup: How We Arrived Here
We were taught that success equals fulfillment. But often, what we actually learned was that success equals performance.
We learned to:
- Code-switch in professional spaces
- People-please to advance
- Shrink our way to “success”
- Define achievement by external metrics rather than internal alignment
Then we arrive at our destinations and think: “Is THIS it?” Is this all there is for my hard work, for my sacrifice?
The Crisis: When Achievement Feels Hollow
This is where many of us find ourselves asking the hard questions:
- “Who am I without my title?”
- “What do I even WANT anymore?”
- “I achieved everything I was ‘supposed’ to… now what?”
Often, our identity becomes synonymous with our accomplishments, leaving us feeling hollow when the external validation isn’t enough to fill the internal void.
The Three Sacred Questions
I’ve developed three diagnostic questions to help you gauge the authenticity of your success:
- Am I proud of WHAT I’m doing? (the work itself, the impact it makes)
- Am I proud of WHO I’m being? (your character, your values, your ability to show up authentically)
- Am I energized or exhausted? (sustainability check)
If all three are YES → Way to go, authentic success!
If any are NO → It may be time to reassess
The Reclamation: Coming Back to Yourself
The path forward isn’t about discarding your achievements. It’s about reclaiming your authentic definition of success. This means:
Redefining Success on YOUR Terms
Not society’s terms. Not your family’s terms. YOUR terms. Success that includes both achievement AND authenticity—a both/and approach rather than either/or.
Identifying Your Sacred Anchors
These are the non-negotiables of who you are—the core parts of your identity that should evolve with you, never be abandoned for advancement. Your sacred anchors might include:
- Your values and moral compass
- Your cultural identity and heritage
- Your authentic communication style
- Your purpose and what truly drives you
- Your personal boundaries and standards
Building from an Aligned Place
Rather than building on a performance-based foundation, we build on a foundation of authentic alignment where advancement doesn’t require abandonment.
Sacred Reflection Questions
Take a moment to journal on these questions:
- What would success look like if it was defined entirely by your authentic values?
- What parts of yourself have you left behind in pursuit of achievement?
- What are your sacred anchors—the non-negotiables of who you are?
- How can you advance without abandoning yourself?
The Way Forward
It’s crucial that we:
- Notice when advancement asks you to abandon yourself rather than evolve
- Recognize the exhaustion of “performing success” in ways that feel foreign to your spirit
- Identify and protect your sacred anchors—those parts of you that are meant to remain
- Redefine success as authentic alignment, measured by internal integrity, not just external accomplishment
Remember, beloved: you don’t have to choose between success and authenticity. You can have both. The goal isn’t to choose between advancement and authenticity—it’s to advance WITHOUT abandoning yourself.
“I can advance without abandoning myself.”
This isn’t just an affirmation—it’s a way of life that’s completely available to you.
